The Body Mass Index (BMI) is the metric widely used for defining the human weight adjusted-for-height characteristics in adults and for categorising according to the 1995 WHO Expert Consultation Group technical report. Commonly, it is assumed to equate the individual’s fat content and by extension a risk factor for developing several health problems. In addition to its general use, the BMI finds utility in most population-based studies and by extension it informs public health intervention policies.
There are however reasons to interrogate its effectiveness. It is evident that the BMI does not adequately capture the fraction of fat in different body sites given the parameters included in its data. There is evidence that indicate health risks may not directly correlate with 'BMI' especially in black populations or age groups and the presumed health risks in these groups may be imprecise and misleading.
